In a showcase of community commitment and collaboration, the Branch County Community Foundation, alongside other dedicated partners, took center stage at the September Branch County Association of Realtors and Chamber of Commerce coffee hour. The gathering provided a platform for addressing one of the most pressing social issues facing our community: homelessness.
A Unified Approach to Ending Homelessness
The Branch County Community Foundation plays a pivotal role by convening the Local Planning Body. This local committee, an committee of the Michigan Balance of State, brings together a diverse group of stakeholders, including shelters, veteran service providers, nonprofits, county and city representatives, the Branch Intermediate School District (BISD), Pines, state officials, and more. The goal? To make homelessness rare, brief, and one time.
Meeting monthly, the Local Planning Body serves as a forum where partners share updates, celebrate achievements, and strategize on new initiatives. These gatherings are crucial for keeping all members informed about the latest activities and accomplishments in the collective quest to end homelessness.
Building Knowledge and Sharing Best Practices
One of the most significant benefits of this collaborative approach is the opportunity to build foundational knowledge of services and resources. By pooling insights and experiences, the Local Planning Body develops effective strategies to address homelessness, which is increasingly complex and multifaceted. The rise in homelessness is a stark reality, with a 7.7% increase in literally homeless individuals from 2022 to 2023. This surge underscores the urgency and complexity of the issue.
Homelessness and unstable housing are not one-dimensional problems, and there is no single solution. The challenge is multi-layered, requiring a nuanced and adaptable approach. This is where the strength of the Local Planning Body shines. By fostering collaboration among diverse organizations, we can share best practices, explore innovative approaches, and address the varying needs within our community.
How Can You Make an Impact?
The first step in making an impact on an issue as complex as homelessness is educating yourself on the issue and understanding why it is important, what the effects are on your community, and what the major barriers are for assistance. Knowledge is power and the more you know, the more you can do.
Influence. Everybody has a sphere of influence, which is an important tool. Influencer advocacy is a strategy that uses the trust and rapport that you have within your networks to promote change for social causes, like homelessness. This can be done on a local, state, and national level. You can be an advocate for change and bring attention to the need to increase funding for homeless programs locally.
Financial Support. Financial support is a constant need for any nonprofit. Financial support, specifically to operations for our small nonprofits, is critical for organizations to continue to serve our community. Operation donations help continue and improve the work that is being done to combat this issue.
Board Membership. There is always a need for volunteer board members who are aligned with the organization’s mission and vision. By volunteering as a board member, you can support a cause you care about and contribute to the particular organization’s growth and development.
Volunteering. Much like board membership there is always room for volunteering with organizations that are making homelessness rare, brief, and one time. Volunteer work can be more flexible to fit with your strengths and desire to give back.
Looking Ahead
As we move forward, the commitment demonstrated by the Branch County Community Foundation and its partners is both reassuring and inspiring. The coffee hour was a testament to the power of collective action and the impact of united efforts in addressing homelessness.
The challenges we face are significant, but so are our collective strengths. By continuing to work together, share knowledge, and support one another, we can make meaningful strides toward ending homelessness in Branch County. The power of collaboration cannot be overstated—it is the key to unlocking innovative solutions and achieving lasting change.
For those interested in joining this vital effort, there are numerous ways to get involved. Whether through volunteering, donating, or simply spreading awareness, every contribution helps build a stronger, more resilient community.
